What Islamic Scholars teach about Hell.

Rev. David N. Hughes • Personal Growth
In Islam the concept of hell is a very real one, however the description of hell that is found in the Qur'an is far different than the one found in the Bible.

The Qur'an gives the following four revelations about hell:

Hell is a burning fire:

SHAKIR: But they reject the hour, and We have prepared a burning fire for him who rejects the hour. Surah 025.011

People that are cast into hell are chained together:

PICKTHAL: And when they are flung into a narrow place thereof, chained together, they pray for destruction there. Surah 025.013

Men and women that are in hell have boiling water poured on them:

YUSUFALI: In its midst and in the midst of boiling hot water will they wander round! Surah 055.044

Those in hell cannot die.

SHAKIR: He will drink it little by little and will not be able to swallow it agreeably, and death will come to him from every quarter, but he shall not die; and there shall be vehement chastisement before him.
                                                                                                                                Surah 14.019

Most Muslims believe that they will stand before Allah and a ledger of deeds will be opened and a scale will be used to weigh the deeds of the individual, those who have done the mostly good deeds will go to paradise, and those who haven't go to hell.

YUSUFALI: And the Book (of Deeds) will be placed (before you); and thou wilt see the sinful in great terror because of what is (recorded) therein; they will say, "Ah! woe to us! what a Book is this! It leaves out nothing small or great, but takes account thereof!" They will find all that they did, placed before them: And not one will thy Lord treat with injustice. Surah 018.049

YUSUFALI: Then those whose balance (of good deeds) is heavy,- they will attain salvation:
                                                                                                                           Surah 023.102

YUSUFALI: But those whose balance is light, will be those who have lost their souls, in Hell will they abide. Surah 023.103

Sadly, most people believe that good deeds do indeed keep them out of hell, which is not the case. The Bible says that Jesus Christ died for our sins and the gift a salvation, which means, the forgiveness of sin came through Him and not our deeds. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." John 14:6
