If a Muslim asked

Rev. David N. Hughes • Outreach
If you were asked by a Muslim "why are you a Christian?" How would you respond? In reality they are asking...

Please understand that the motive behind the question should govern your response. They are not asking because they are drawn to Christianity. The question that they are asking in reality is "why aren't you a Muslim?"

Perhaps they have seen you and your family attend church Sunday after Sunday, and your life showcases  Christian virtues and values. You have always been kind and courteous, even during trying times.

They might point out that they pray five times a day. They also live a lifestyle that is pleasing to Allah. So why wouldn't you want to be a Muslim, and worship the one God Allah?

Would you let this opportunity go by without an adequate response? Would you be at a loss for the words to say? Would you use "church words" which they would not understand, such as "I am covered by the blood of Jesus," that's why I am a Christian.

The Apostle Paul writes in his Epistle to the church at Colosse, these words:

Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.                                                                                                                                                         Colossians 4:6

May I suggest the following answer for the Questioning Muslim? This is an answer that is self-explanatory, and easy for the Muslim to understand.

I am a Christian because:

  •   I believe the Bible
  •   I believe God's plan of salvation as revealed in the Bible.
  •   I believe the person of Jesus Christ as revealed in the Bible.
  •   I believe in the Christian teaching about God and the Trinity.
