there are Islamic scholars that have recorded that Muhammad did in fact think about, and tried to commit suicide.
Muhammad's call to prophet hood was very unique; there is no record in the Bible or any other religion that acknowledges an encounter such as Muhammad's.
Muhammad had interacted with Christians, Jews and the Arabs and rejected their religious practices and beliefs.
Muhammad would to go to the cave of Hira, which is located outside of Mecca, and there he would worship his god. During this time an angel appeared to Muhammad and demanded the he read. Muhammad replied that he was unable to read, and the angel forcefully took hold of Muhammad and commanded that he read. Muhammad replied that he was unable to read. The angel pressed Muhammad so hard that he was unable to stand the pain, just as he thought that he could not withstand the pain any longer the angel released him. This scene was played out two more times before Muhammad was set free and returned home.
When Muhammad returned home to his wife, khadija, he was terrified. However Khadija was convinced that Muhammad received a special calling from Allah, and took him to see her cousin, Waraqa bin Naufal bin Asad bin 'Abdul 'Uzza bin Qusai. Cousin Waraqu claimed to be a Christian, and wrote the Gospels in Arabic. After Muhammad revealed to Waraqu what had transpired in the cave, Waraqu replied, the spirit being that Muhammad had encountered, was Gabriel, the angel who keeps the secrets of God. Notice that the spirit being that Muhammad had encountered never gave his name, the spirit being was named by Waraqu. Waraqu died shortly after this meeting had taken place.
"But after a few days Waraqa died and the Divine Inspiration was also paused for a while and the Prophet became so sad as we have heard that he intended several times to throw himself from the tops of high mountains and every time he went up the top of a mountain in order to throw himself down, Gabriel would appear before him and say, "O Muhammad! You are indeed Allah's Apostle in truth" whereupon his heart would become quiet and he would calm down and would return home. And whenever the period of the coming of the inspiration used to become long, he would do as before, but when he used to reach the top of a mountain, Gabriel would appear before him and say to him what he had said."
Quoted from the Sahih (authentic) Hadith (traditions) of Bukhari, [2], Volume 9, number 111.
From reading the historical record it appears that Muhammad did in fact try to kill himself. He interacted with the spirit being he called Gabriel for the rest of his life.
Gabriel of the Bible.
The angel Gabriel would appear to the Prophet Daniel three times. Gabriel did not violently touch Daniel in any way, in fact he helped Daniel to get up off the ground after Daniel had fallen on his face in fear. Gabriel told Daniel "do not be afraid." Refer to Chapters 8,9,and 10 in the Book of Daniel, which is found in the Old Testament of the Bible.
The angel Gabriel appeared to Zacharias to proclaim that Zacharias wife, Elizabeth, would bear a son who would go to the people of Israel to announce the coming of the Christ child. Gabriel also told Zacharias "not to be afraid." Refer to the Book of Luke, chapter 1, which can be found in the New Testament of the Bible.
The angel Gabriel also appeared to Mary, who was virgin, that she would be the mother of Jesus Christ, who is the Son of God. Gabriel also told Mary " do not be afraid." This account can also be found in the Book of Luke chapter 1, which can be found in the New Testament of the Bible.
